Mom brings rabid bat to school, lets kids touch it
STEVENSVILLE, Montana - A parent of two students at Ravalli County elementary schoolfound a dead bat carried into the house by the family cat. The parent placed the dead bat in a jar and brought it to the school the next day to show the students.
Students and teachers in at least five classrooms touched the bat, along with a few other staff members at the school.
The dead bat was later confirmed to be diseased and now, about 75 elementary school students have started a series or rabies shots.
The parent gave presentations in five classrooms and allowed kids to touch the bat last week. Each strudent who touched the nat ws offered a sanitary wipe by the parent.
The exposed students will receive six doses of anti-rabies vaccine.
Even though dead bats don’t bite, the rabies virus is transmitted via mucous membranes, small (sometimes undetectable) breaks in the human skin and via open wounds. Touching a rabid bat, even a dead rabid bat, can transmit the fatal disease.
Stevensville Elementary School’s liability insurance will pay up to $70,000 for the exposed children to be vaccinated. The overall cost could surpass $150,000.
The school now has a policy requiring that visitors to the school obtain a pass before proceeding to the classroom.
