Skunk Information
Michigan skunks breed during months of February and March. During
these months we get many calls due to amorous skunks spraying and
getting sprayed! Sometimes the female skunk will spray a male skunk
that is cming on a little too aggressive for her likes. Often, a male skunk
will spray another male skunk that is geting too close to his girl! Either
way, when it happens under a sun room or in a crawl space, the whole
house smells of skunk!
Skunks have an average of 4 to 6 babies each year, being born in
the months of May and June.
A skunk can hit its target with the full blast of its spray up to about six
feet. After that the spray spreads out and even the smallest particles
cling to what they hit, If you’re looking at the rear end of a skunk, they
have the ability to make you smell bad right up to about 23 feet. The
skunk spray odor is stronger the closer to the skunk but even if hit at
distance, people have been known to start gagging.
Skunks will eat just about anything. Cat food, dog food, drippings from
the barbecue, and of course - they love investigating trash bags.
Keep all pet food indoors, keep your garbage in sealable trash cans,
and make sure your deck or patio doesn’t have any tasty offerings to
lure in skunks.

ADVANCED WILDLIFE CONTROL LLC
REMOVES SKUNKS FROM YOUR YARD AND THEN TAKES THEM AWAY FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
We won’t simply chase skunks a few feet away
from your home! They can cause too much damage!
Skunks Tearing Up Yards
Skunks will create a ton of damage to a yard full of grass. They will
do enough damage overnight that a homeowner might think that a
neighbor used a rototiller on the yard! Skunks dig in yards and turn
over grass or sod in search of grubs. By the time that a homeowner
realizes that it is a skunk that is ruining his lawn, the damage is
extensive.
A sure sign that skunks are in your yard is the discovery of
small 3 to 4 inch cone-shaped holes. These are the probing holes that
skunks dig to look for food!
Can I just put down grub killer?
.
Grub killers are effective at killing grubs and will deter skunks from
digging in the grass. However, by the time that you apply the grub
killer and give it time to work, the skunks will do even more damage!
Trapping and removing a skunk that is tearing up a lawn is the best
way to get rid of the skunk for good. After the skunk is gone, it is best
to keep your yard grub free. Chances are that your neighborhood has
a few roaming skunks at night.
Skunk Diseases
Skunks are the primary carriers of rabies in Michigan. Skunks showing
abnormal behaviors, such as aggressiveness or daytime activities
are showing signs of disease. Skunks can also harbor canine and feline
distemper. Feline distemper is highly contagious to pets.
This disease is fatal.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resourses and Environmemnt says:
“Due to the similarity of some of the clinical signs of canine distemper
and rabies, affected animals should be handled with caution...”

Getting Rid of Skunk Odor
If Your pet has been sprayed by a skunk, this formula will work wonders
on eliminating the odor.
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap
Work the mixture through your pet's hair and leave it on for three to four minutes. Rinse with warm water. This may need to be repeated several times. Be sure to throw away any excess mixture. Do NOT get any of the mixture in the eyes. Consult your vet before
Note that the above mixture may bleach the hair color temporarily until your pet’s hair grows out a bit.
Common antidotes like tomato juice, vinegar, or regular shampoos will not be as effective. Our technicians occasionally find themselves using
this formula on themselves after “one of those days!”
